Silicosis is a serious lung disease that occurs as a result of inhalation of dust containing a mineral substance called “crystalline silica”. Very small particles of silica lodge in the tissues of the lungs and ultimately form small, hard nodules that cause irreparable damage to the lungs, leaving them unable to function properly.

Dusty Working Environment
Most victims of silicosis have contracted this disease as a result of working in the mining industry however silicosis can be developed by working in blasting operations, foundries and stone, clay and glass manufacturing industry. There is no cure for this condition, but treatments involving oxygen therapy, as well as some new experimental methods (whole-lung lavage, aluminum inhalation and corticosteroids) have proven to provide some relief of symptoms for some sufferers.

Employers Liability for Health & Safety
There are regulations are in place to ensure that employers control dust levels in working areas in order to provide a safe working environment. If you have contracted silicosis due to an employer’s negligence you may be able to make a silicosis compensation claim if you can show that your employer has failed to meet these standards. If you have been diagnosed with silicosis as a result of your employer’s breach of duty you should make urgent arrangements to discuss your potential silicosis compensation claim with a lawyer – time limits do apply to these claims and you should not delay taking legal advice.

Pneumoconiosis - Black Lung - The Dust
Pneumoconiosis which is also known as “black lung” or “the dust” is a similar condition to silicosis which occurs due to prolonged inhalation of coal dust. Black lung occurs when dust particles are breathed in and retained in the airways causing healthy lung tissue to be replaced by scar tissue. Miners working in badly ventilated areas are at the highest risk of pneumoconiosis. Those who develop black lung disease will find themselves facing a significant decrease in quality of life and like silicosis there is no cure for pneumoconiosis. There are, however, means of treating the disease so as to lessen the patient’s suffering. Treatment begins by ceasing exposure to the coal dust and continues with a regimen of ongoing oxygen therapy.
