Miners Lung – Black Lung – The Dust

Pneumoconiosis is a medical condition also known as miner’s lung, black lung and the dust. It usually develops from long term inhalation of dust particles which causes hard nodules to form in the lungs reducing the elastic tissue to the extent that the lung cannot function properly. Pneumoconiosis is characterised by extreme difficulty in breathing with constant wheezing and coughing. In extreme cases other complications may arise including cor pulmonale (a heart condition) and tuberculosis. High risk substances include, but are not limited to, coal dust, asbestos fibres, silica, talc and metal particles. Those most at risk include workers in mines, sand pits, foundries and metallurgical industries due to the iron oxides (rust), silicates (rock dust), or carbonates (coal dust) present in the air.
