KEYBOARD RSI :: TYPISTS & SECRETARIES CLAIMS

Office workers do not often concern themselves with the possibility of getting injured at work however whilst there are fewer risks compared to field work or other more physical jobs, people with desk jobs particularly typists and secretaries should keep in mind the very real risk of suffering from repetitive strain injury (RSI). Keyboard RSI has become a serious problem for people who spend most of their working hours in front of a computer tapping on a keyboard. Typing can strain muscles, especially in the wrists, after long typing sessions that keep arms and wrists in an incorrect, rigid position for an extended time.

Repetitive Strain Injury

Symptoms of keyboard RSI include pain, tingling and numbness associated with a decrease in strength and endurance of the fingers, hand, arms and shoulders. The symptoms usually first appear during night so that many RSI sufferers attribute the symptoms to a bad sleeping position. If you suffer from any of the relevant symptoms and you are a secretary, typist or technician who spends a lot of time in front of a keyboard it is possible that you are already suffering from keyboard RSI and should consult a doctor and subsequently a lawyer.

Employers Duty of Care

Keyboard RSI is well known within an office environment and your employer is legally bound to provide you with a safe working environment. This means that your workstation, chair and equipment should be ergonomically designed to lessen the possibility of repetitive strain injury whilst typing. In case your workstations are not designed appropriately inform your employer about the fact and remind him of his legal duty and responsibility for health and safety. If you develop RSI and it seems to be as a result of the poor working conditions you should make arrangements to consult a personal injury solicitor at the first opportunity.
